Substitutions and Alterations

Substitutions:

  • Lime: Lemon, orange, unsweetened cranberry juice
  • Strawberries: blueberries, blackberries, peach, pineapple, etc
  • Seltzer: sparking mineral water, spindrift, Other flavored sparkling water
  • Simple syrup: maple syrup, stevia drops*, honey or agave simple syrup

*Zero-calorie sweeteners are often sweeter than regular sugar, which means you may need to use less. Be sure to check the package for conversion guidelines and adjust accordingly.

Alterations:

  • Make it spicy: A spicy margarita is nice on occasion, so how about a spicy mocktail? Add 3-4 slices of jalapeño to your shaker tin before muddling, or mix in 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of Tajín for a flavorful kick.

Ingredients

  • Juice from 1/2 lime
  • Two strawberries
  • 1 1/2 tsp simple syrup
  • 2 fl oz tart cherry juice
  • 8 fl oz seltzer water
  • 1 lime wheel (garnish)

Instructions

  1. Combine lime juice, strawberries, simple syrup, and tart cherry juice in a shaker tin or glass jar. Using a muddler or the back of a wooden spoon, crush the strawberries until they reach a pulpy consistency.
  2. Add ice, seal the shaker tin or jar, and shake vigorously for 20–30 seconds.
  3. Strain into a glass with ice, top with seltzer water, and garnish with a lime wheel.
